There are many companies that offer cheap storage space for all kinds of purposes. There are those companies that specialize in cheap book storage, for example, or those that offer cheap mass storage. Many people nowadays have to move into a smaller house or apartment, which many times don't have enough space for all the things like furniture or pictures that were in their old house. Not wanting to get rid of their belongings after they move they opt for cheap external storage to be able to keep their things.

First they have to find out, and label, all the things that either will go into their new home or will be stored in a storage facility. There is no point of renting a container when one doesn't know how much storage space one needs. It is strongly suggested that only items that have a practical purpose go into the new home. Things with a sentimental value should be stored safely, in order not to take up limited space at home.

Renting storage space is like renting any other property. Different quotes have to be checked, the location of the different storage companies, pricing, etc. What kind of service does the company offer? Is free collection available? Does the company offer van hire to move things?

It is highly recommendable to do business with a company that offers a self-contained storage room or container to each client, which then can be locked with the client's own padlock. He keeps the keys, and is therefore assured that nobody else has access to his storage space. The storage facility should be dry, and should have a fire and burglar alarm.

Most companies offer a module system. The items to be stored are loaded straight from the house into a container module, which then is transported by truck to the storage facility. This reduces the risk of damage, particularly of fragile items like paintings or chandeliers, since they are moved only once.

The rates of storage facilities depend generally on the size of space to be rented and the kind of additional services, like van hire, that are offered. It's always good to 'shop around', since in this industry competition is very high, which is good for the consumer.
